Carolina Panthers (+3) @ Washington Redskins (-3) Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 1 p.m. ET

After a stellar rookie season that far exceeded anyone’s expectations, Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers hasn’t been able to capitalize in his sophomore campaign. With only one win in the first seven games for the Panthers, it’d be safe to say that Carolina has been arguably one of the most disappointing teams of the season thus far. Granted, the Panthers have had an extremely tough schedule in the first half of the season going up against some of the league’s elite teams in the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears, but this team hasn’t been able to live up to the potential of the offense. As a middle-of-the-pack squad on both sides of the football, Carolina isn’t intimidating any opposing squads this year with this season’s breakout rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III next on the schedule in Week 9. Before heading into the 2012 NFL Draft, all the hype surrounded Griffin and Andrew Luck in terms of which superstar-caliber quarterback would be picked first by the Indianapolis Colts. After much debate, the Colts chose to go with Luck and that may have been the best thing to happen to the Redskins in a long time as Griffin has exceeded expectations in the same fashion Newton did a year ago. With a somewhat mediocre team surrounding him, Griffin has been able to lead Washington to three wins in the first seven games. Although not all that impressive considering the competition in the NFC East division with the Giants, Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles as talented as they come, but a great start nonetheless for a quarterback that appears to have a bright future ahead of him. Heading into this Week 9 matchup, the main topic of discussion will be Griffin against Newton. The debate will rage on about which of these two up-and-comers is better quarterback with the brightest future. Despite all the talk and debate, a football game still needs to be played with both teams desperately trying to end losing streaks. Washington will come into this Week 9 showdown losing two straight while Carolina will attempt to snap a five-game slide. At this point in time, the edge in this matchup of up-and-coming quarterbacks goes to Griffin’s Redskins with a -3 point spread. This spread is right on the money in my opinion as I believe the Redskins will beat the struggling Panthers in fairly convincing fashion in the nation’s capital.

Prediction: Redskins -3
