Almost NFL fiasco Monday Night Football
Monday Night Football could have seen one of its biggest fiasco’s yet, but was averted thanks to the efficiency of the NFL team, Pittsburgh Steelers. During the match between the Steelers and the San Diego Chargers on Monday night, an error occurred that could have changed the way the game ended, and is currently under heavy review and scrutiny, as the past few weeks have been full of errors on behalf of the refs and the league. During the game, a bizarre clock error occurred, where 18 seconds were improperly run off the clock late in the 4th quarter, from 2:56 to 2:38. It happened right after the Chargers kickoff went out of bounds in the end zone, and the official clock continued counting down as the Steelers were taking the field to start their drive. It finally stopped on the 2:38 mark, but left the Black and Gold with 18 seconds fewer. The good news is that despite the lack of time, the Steelers were still able to score a game-winning touchdown on the last play of regulation. Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell was able to get the ball across the goal line before his knee touched the ground, check out the video here. The consequences would probably be much harsher had they not scored. Even then, this is a huge problem that the NFL has to look into, as many fans know, 18 seconds is more than enough time to make a comeback, get down the field far enough for a field goal, or even make a Hail Mary pass for an unexpected touchdown. The official clock should always be accurate, and should always be carefully managed to avoid such possible disasters. Along with the ref’s making bad calls, the clock should be the least of anyone’s worries. It is what every NFL quarterback and team uses to gauge what last-minute play or strategy they should use. Last Monday, the league made a huge officiating mistake, and if anything had occurred negatively during this game, it would spell disaster.
