Minnesota Vikings @ Houston Texans Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 1 p.m. ET

The Adrian Peterson show will be coming to Reliant Stadium on Sunday with the Minnesota Vikings hoping to ride the superstar running back’s historic season into the playoffs. Peterson has been an absolute monster as of late with eight straight games of 108 rushing yards or more. Not only is Peterson single-handedly keeping the Vikings alive in terms of playoff contention in the NFC, but he’s also approaching a historic mark in single-season rushing yards. Peterson will come into Week 16’s matchup against the Houston Texans only 293 yards short of tying Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105 rushing yards in a single season. Although Peterson will likely not eclipse that number against the Texans’ defense on Sunday, few teams have been able to contain the All-Pro over the past few weeks. Peterson has rushed for over 200 yards twice in the last three weeks and has no intentions of slowing down in the final two weeks of the season with only 150 yards per game in the final two contests to get ahead of Dickerson. Peterson’s numbers are remarkable to say the least, but what’s even more amazing is that he’s had this kind of historic season after coming off surgery to repair a torn MCL and ACL suffered at the end of last season. The future Hall of Famer seems destined to reach greatness this season, but will have a tough task ahead against the 5th best defense in the league in terms of stopping the run. The Texans only give up 93.2 rushing yards per game this season and will put the entire focus of the defense into containing Peterson. As for the Vikings, Minnesota will also have their hands full defensively going up against one of the best offenses in the NFL. Houston continues to dominate both with the pass and the run utilizing the likes of Andre Johnson downfield and Arian Foster coming out of the backfield. Both players will be a challenge for the Vikings’ defense on Sunday in Houston. Coming into Week 16’s matchup between these two teams, the Texans are heavy favorites to get the win at home. Houston is favored with a -9 point spread to get the win, but I believe Peterson will continue to torch opposing secondaries making this game much closer than anticipated. Peterson having a record-day in terms of rushing yards isn’t likely against a defense like Houston’s, but he’ll do enough to keep Minnesota in the game.

Prediction: Vikings +9
